Gordon's London Dry Gin 70cl is a brand of London Dry Gin first produced in 1769. Back in 1751, when Alexander Gordon first created his unsweetened, gloriously flavoured gin, he was creating a style that would become known around the world as London Dry Gin.
Gordon’s London Dry Gin is possibly the most famous Gin brand out there, holding around 35% of Gin sales in the United Kingdom alone and preserving a strong foothold in every market in the world.
Gordon’s Gin has an iconic stature has been, built since its initial conception as a Southwark-based distillery in 1769 by Alexander Gordon. The creation later moved to Clerkenwell in 1786 and the white spirit sailed the seas through the 1800’s, producing legions of fans over the world. As with many Gins of that time, it was in tremendous demand and some cases was handsomely paid for in gold dust. The British distillery is, now located on the Laindon site in Basildon, Essex to meet the great demands of manufacturing. It still houses ‘Old Tom’, copper still going back to over 200 years ago (Gordon’s Dry Gin is also, distilled in different locations around the world).
The particular botanical blend is locked in the lips of eleven people in the whole world, a secret that, has been kept for an astonishing 240 years. The Gordon's London Dry Gin is triple-distilled and allegedly contains juniper berries, coriander seeds, angelica root, orris root, orange and lemon peel, ginger, cassia oil, nutmeg and liquorice. According to Gordon’s Gin, up to 3,000 botanicals are inspected yearly in the quest to find the exact blend of flavours to create their consistent taste. Gordon’s Gin juniper berry crop is hand-chosen every year and stored for two years to increase the oils and encourage the flavours to mellow out. This Gordon's Gin intensifies the juniper flavour and is said to be the reason behind the Gordon Gins more of a traditional profile. The Gins brand began production of a Sloe Gin in 1906 which has persisted in production to this day with new shipments released yearly.

Gordon’s London Dry Gin has a green bottle that is instantly recognisable in the United Kingdom and has gone a long way in further bonding their iconic reputation. It is quite rare to go into a pub or even bar and not see it! The clear glass story of Gordon’s Gin, however, it is also familiar to many, but it is shocking to hear how few know the contrast between the two. Stay with us here; the Gordon's Gin anorak is coming on, but it is worth it. The green bottle is at a strength of 37.5% Alcohol By Volume whereas the clear glass version is an Export Strength variation originally designed for external (non-UK) markets at 47.5% Alcohol By Volume. As much as the green appearance of the bottle may appear to be a marketing ploy to bring attention to a back bar, it is quite the opposite. Green came first. The real reason for its use is due to manufacturing constraints back in 1800’s Britain as it was too expensive to produce clear glass given how rudimentary the techniques were at the time. Most bottles were green back then. The now distinctive bright version of Gordon’s Gin was, first used in celebration of a large Australian order placed in 1907, more than 100 years after the Gin was, launched. Ever since the distinction between domestic and export has remained. There you go, an entirely geeky fact to use for your pub quiz!
