In 1840 Carling Beer started a small brewing movement in London, trading Beer to veterans at the town camp. In 1878 both of Carling's sons, William and John built a six-storey distillery in London, the UK the distillery was destroyed by fire a year after it opening. Thomas Carling was helping to fight the fire and died of pneumonia.

William and John Carling took over the company, naming it the W & J Carling Brewing Co. John Carling died in 1911 and the business changed hands various times since.
